A+!

12:16PM Saturday, June 28, 2008

It's been a while since I've done any updating, but it's hard to keep up with the site during the summer when I'm working a full time job and taking summer school classes as well.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been keeping up with the site and supporting the cause. My class has ended, and I did end up getting an A! I can safely say that my site produced the most hits and the most revenue out of everyone's in class, by a landslide. Even though class is over, I will continue to maintain and market the site. Thanks again everyone! Your support is greatly appreciated.

We're still going strong! Almost to 500 pixels removed.
Here's something I probably should have done weeks ago, but only just got around to it:

It's not much, but hopefully this will spike up my hits a little bit!

Man Box???

Finals are finally over, and school is out! I still have a couple more weeks until this project will be graded, so keep on removing pixels!

Meanwhile, I've come across a comedic, yet slightly different take on my website: Remove My Man Box. Yes, that's right. "Man box". This gives me quite a giggle.

Woohoo! Cheaper pixels!

Finals week is upon us, so I haven't been as attentive to site updates as I wanted to be, but tomorrow is my presentation of the website! In honor of that, and hopefully to generate a few more last minute hits, I've decided to lower the price of the pixels from $1 a pixel to $.50 a pixel!!! (Note: this means that any pixels that are purchased from here on out-- unless I decide to change the price again-- will be worth $0.50 per pixel. This does not apply to previous donations.) I've still got a few more weeks until the hits are tallied up, so keep checking back! Again, I'd like to emphasize that the main reason that I'm doing this is for class, and I'm not in it for the money.

Happy Earth Day

After a relatively slow weekend, I've decided to rethink a few of my strategies. Here are some new things to look forward to in the near future:

  • Ability to add pixels
  • Every 10,000 unique hits remove 1 pixel.
  • Mailing List
  • Email to all of the contributers when the final pixel has been removed
Meanwhile, here are a few links and some more interesting tidbits I've gathered on Internet censorship:
The OpenNet Initiative (ONI) has just come out with a book, Access Denied: The Practice and Policy of Global Internet Filtering. After reading some reviews, the book appears to touch on details of Internet censorship around the world, and how it has and will affect the way that we can access various pieces of the Internet. The Internet as we know it is an open range, and since it's still in its (somewhat) developmental stages where we're just starting to grasp the endless possibilities of what's out there. Unfortunately, with every new medium comes a new set of rules, and while the amount of online content is growing exponentially, the amount of censored content is also steadily increasing.

"There are three basic rationales for Internet censorship: politics and power; social norms, morals and religion; and security concerns." (Access: Nature, "Census of Cyberspace Censoring") Rather than providing reasons for or against Internet censorship, however, the book seems to be simply a reference for documenting the regulation of censorship on a global scale.

Also in the news today is an article from CNN, Writers push for laws to maintain Internet freedom. A story that hits home for many who enjoy watching TV as well as surfing the 'net. Of course, we all want our favorite TV shows to continue (as many have already started making their comeback to their usual viewing times), and we all want to be able to freely browse around the Internet without much intervention (see Wikipedia's Network Neutrality entry). While the writer's strike is over for the most part, there are still a lot of issues that need to be worked out in this area.

Day Two.

5:14PM Thursday, April 17, 2008

So far, it looks like there's been a little hype generated. My hits are definitely starting to take off, and I've actually sold some pixels! (I would just like to point out right now that I have not and do not intend to remove any pixels "just to get the ball rolling". All of the pixels that I have sold have been paid for.)

At this point, I'm just trying to get the word out as much as possible. A few things have been called to my attention along the way, and I'd also like to note that this is still a work in progress. I've had a lot of suggestions as well, so perhaps the site will evolve a little bit as time goes on, but the main idea will stay the same.

Remove my Box is launched!

So this idea has been sizzling around in my head for a while, inspired by asking a simple question to several people: What is one thing you'd like to see on the Internet? Most common response: boobs. (Proof)

I tried to come up with a concept that would allow me to give the user (you!) what they wanted (boobs!) and find a way to integrate that with a few other concepts to make it more engaging and interactive. This is what I've come up with so far, with a few kinks that I will iron out in upcoming days.

Essentially, I'd really like to make a point about Internet censorship. I'm hoping that this little endeavor of mine will take a more artistic spin, as opposed to "just some girl who wants to show her titties on the intarwebs." The Internet is a marvelous thing, and for many people, it's relatively new. We're still getting used to certain freedoms that we have based on the fact that it is a newly popular medium, and not all of the rules and boundaries have been pushed yet. I personally don't think that certain things should be banned from the Internet, and while it is a powerful and very open way to communicate with the world, I think we deserve a relative amount of freedom.

So here we go. Are you going to join me in my revolution against "The Man"?
The site is up, go get 'em!
